Review of the Week

I found this game going pre-owned at my local Blockbuster the day it came out here in the UK.... A good sign already right?
I'm a fan of the Riddick movies and enjoyed "Escape from Butchers Bay" which came out a few years back on the original xbox. That said I wasn't really keeping an eye out on this game, mainly because I played the Demo and thought it to be a bit.... simple. However seeing it going for £15 in a bargain bin was a bargain I didn't think wise to pass up.
Like most people I didn't realise until I started playing "Assault on Dark Athena" that the disc also contains "Escape from Butchers Bay", not only that but the Graphics and some of the Game mechanics are improved which is cool I think because playing it is like being able to watch your old memories on a HDTV screen rather than the blurry images in your head.
Gameplay Wise Riddick is ok, nothing overly special but not boring. There is a strong emphasis of hand to hand combat in both games and although the brutal finishes are satisfying the constantly blocking enemies and Riddick's rather bland punches leave much to be desired out of the experience. Apart from throwing punches Riddick also gets his bandaged mitts onto a variety of weapons and mech combat suits which makes the game fall into a typical FPS for large portions of the game.
As for multiplayer, well this is what really lets the game down. Firstly because I bought this game on the day it came out and wasn't able to find a single online game until later in the evening, which in the end only hosted 4 players rather than a full house of 12-16. Due to this the online achievements (achievements being a big part of a game for me ) are near impossible to get. I can understand why no-one is online though, the gameplay online is dull and over done in a hundred FPS's before it but with less variety.
My scores for this game are:-
Storyline - 7 Gameplay - 8 Graphics - 7 Achievements - 4 Multiplayer - 3
Jd's Score:- 5/10
Buy it if you see it going cheap, otherwise buy something else.
